Sunsail vs. The Moorings Yacht Ownership: Are They Really Different?

Sunsail vs. The Moorings Yacht Ownership: Are They Really Different?

For many future owners considering a yacht in an Ownership programme, one of the most common questions is what really differentiates Sunsail from The Moorings. It is a fair question. Both brands operate in many of the same destinations, share operational resources and offer sailing yachts and catamarans built by the same leading shipyards.

On a global scale, Sunsail and The Moorings each retain their own identity, with a distinct history, customer base and visual universe. Their yacht ownership programmes are, however, now very closely aligned. For buyers, the decision is therefore less about choosing one brand over the other and more about finding the right combination of programme, destination, yacht availability and personal preference.

With both Sunsail and The Moorings, new catamarans and monohulls are built to the same specifications, prepared to the same standards and introduced into the fleets with the same level of charter readiness. For owners, each brand therefore offers an equivalent level of quality and flexibility, based on the same management and maintenance agreements, with the possibility of using comparable yachts across both the Sunsail and The Moorings fleets.

How Sunsail and The Moorings Compare Today

Today, the operational differences between Sunsail and The Moorings are far more limited than many people might imagine. In many destinations, the two brands share the same bases, marina facilities, support teams, technical operations and maintenance standards. At a shared base such as Marina Agana in Croatia, it is common to see Sunsail and The Moorings yachts moored side by side.

The two brands may differ in their visual identity, colours, the name displayed on the hull or the UV strip on the genoa. Beyond these aesthetic details, however, equivalent Sunsail and The Moorings models are identical.

Same Catamaran Builders, Different Brand Names

For their sailing catamarans, Sunsail and The Moorings have long trusted Robertson & Caine, the shipyard behind Leopard catamarans.

A catamaran marketed under the Sunsail brand and a catamaran marketed under The Moorings brand are based on the same proven design, adapted to the requirements of charter and yacht ownership, and built in exactly the same way on the same production line, in the same factory.

When a buyer compares a Sunsail catamaran with its The Moorings equivalent, they are comparing two versions of the same yacht from the same builder. The layout, performance profile, charter-specific design and ownership programme benefits are identical. In practical terms, they are comparing two strictly identical yachts.

The same approach for monohulls with Dufour Yachts

This alignment now also applies to monohulls. With Dufour becoming the exclusive supplier of new monohulls for Sunsail and The Moorings, buyers can compare yacht ownership opportunities across both brands with far greater clarity and simplicity.

A Sunsail 44.3 and a Moorings 44.3 are both based on the same Dufour 44, three-cabin model, adapted to the demands of professional use and long-term reliability within a charter fleet.

The shipyard is the same, the selected options and equipment are identical, and so is the structure of the ownership programmes. The owner of a Sunsail 44.3 with Yacht Ownership Programme will be able to sail on a Moorings 44.3, and vice versa, without noticing any difference between the two yachts.

Sunsail vs The Moorings

Two iconic sailing brands with different origins

The Moorings was founded in 1969 with a small fleet of Pearson yachts in the British Virgin Islands, offering travellers a new way to discover sailing through yacht charter in one of the world’s most sought-after cruising grounds. From the outset, the brand built its reputation around quality yachts, attentive service and a premium charter experience.

Sunsail was launched a few years later, in 1974, in the Saronic Gulf in Greece, with seven 25-foot Snapdragon sailing yachts, pioneering the flotilla sailing experience. While The Moorings developed a strong reputation in North America and the Caribbean, Sunsail became a benchmark in the Mediterranean and Europe, particularly for flotilla sailing, learning to sail through its clubs and more accessible charter experiences.

For decades, Sunsail and The Moorings evolved in parallel as two separate, pioneering and competing companies, each with its own identity. This heritage matters, as it explains how the two brands continue to coexist today. Each has retained a loyal customer base in its respective markets and still enjoys strong recognition among sailors, charter clients and owners around the world.

Sunsail vs The Moorings

From competitors to sister companies

In 2005, Sunsail’s parent company, First Choice Holidays, acquired Grand Expeditions, the parent company of The Moorings. This transaction brought Sunsail and The Moorings into the same structure and marked the beginning of a major evolution: the move from competitors to sister companies.

From that point, the focus was on bringing strengths together and enabling each brand to benefit from the other’s advantages. A shared management programme was introduced, with the offers aligned, and a shared owner usage programme was launched at the end of 2006. It remains in place today.

In 2014, the TUI Group created Travelopia, bringing Sunsail, The Moorings, Leopard Catamarans and other specialist travel businesses into the same portfolio. Today, these brands operate under Travelopia, strengthening operational resilience, fleet planning and financing, as well as the stability of yacht ownership programmes worldwide.

In 2024, another step was taken with the arrival of Dufour as the exclusive monohull builder for new yachts entering the Sunsail and The Moorings fleets, further reinforcing the alignment of the offers.

Sunsail vs The Moorings

What should a yacht buyer really compare?

When choosing between a Sunsail yacht ownership programme and a The Moorings programme, a future owner should look beyond the brand question and focus on the factors that truly matter:

The decision is therefore not about choosing the better brand, but about selecting the right yacht, with the right programme, at the right time. The Sunsail and The Moorings Yacht Ownership sales teams have a comprehensive and detailed view of the available opportunities and can use their expertise to guide buyers towards the most suitable choice.

Different brands, identical yachts

Sunsail and The Moorings retain distinct histories, loyal customer bases and their own visual identities. However, when it comes to yacht ownership, the two brands now offer the same programmes and the same sailing yachts.

For owners, this means more choice, greater flexibility and access to two of the most recognised brands in yacht charter, with no compromise on quality or service.
